On ‘La Devinière’, near Charleroi in Belgium, a group of severely disturbed people live together, most of whom have been treated in regular psychiatry. Psychologist Michel Hock brought them together, based on the idea that there are no hopeless cases. According to him, hopeless can only be the way we take care of them. Photographer Pia van Spaendonck followed the group for three years. She made contact with the residents and, in addition to their daily lives, especially captured their exceptionally expressive faces.
