Bekeerd (Converted)
An increasing number of women and men in The Netherlands convert to Islam. Anthropologist Vanessa Vroon-Najem has done research into this phenomenon for her PhD-thesis. Photographer Saskia Aukema made a photo documentary on the same subject, including dozens of portraits of converts. They have joined forces for the book 'Bekeerd' ('Converted') that was published in April 2014 by Komma Publishers. The book is designed to increase knowledge about this interesting social development and challenges stereotypical images of Muslims and converts that many people still have.
