On March 12, 2020 photographer Anoek van Nunen was all prepared to photograph the premiere of the new performance by trumpeter Michael Varekamp, when the COVID-19 measures were announced. The performance was canceled and the defeat and desperation on the trumpet player's face was clearly visible. Anoek immediately thought "I have to record this". She decided to photograph artists in empty venues, where the performance would have taken place before it was cancelled. There is something surreal about seeing Dutch artists such as Freek de Jonge, Francis van Broekhuizen and Lee Towers on stage in front of a venue without an audience. With the photo series 'Cancelled', Anoek has captured the affected artists and their unbridled passion for the profession and their deep desire to perform in front of a enthusiastic audience.
